Blue 9 makes a shot at the end of the offence time. When the ball is in the air, the shot clock signal sounds. The ball doesn’t touch a ring, and offensive rebound is taken by Blue team player. The referees stop the game, calling a shot clock violation for the blue team.
FIBA OBRI 29.1.1. To constitute a shot for a field goal within 24 seconds:
The ball must leave the player's hand(s) before the shot clock signal sounds, and
After the ball has left the player's hand(s), the ball must touch the ring or enter the basket.
FIBA OBRI 29.1.2. When a shot for a field goal is attempted near the end of the 24-second period and the shot clock signal sounds while the ball is in the air:
If the ball misses the ring, a violation has occurred. However, if the opponents gain an immediate and clear control of the ball, the signal shall be disregarded and the game shall continue.
Outcome: correct decision from the referees. Blue 12 got the rebound, but the ball didn’t touch the ring. Shot clock violation by Blue team. Throw-in for White team.
Black 8 dribbles the ball when his teammate Black 32 sets a screen on a defender Yellow 11. Contact occurres between Black 32 and Yellow 11. The referees leave the episode without a whistle.
FIBA OBRI 33.7. Legal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:
Was stationary (inside his cylinder) when contact occurred.
Had both feet on the floor when contact occurred.
Illegal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:
Was moving when contact occurred.
Did not give sufficient distance in setting a screen outside the field of vision of a
stationary opponent when contact occurred.
Did not respect the elements of time and distance of an opponent in motion when
contact occurred.
Outcome: incorrect decision from the referees. When contact between Black 32 and Yellow 11 occurred, Black 32 was not stationary in his cylinder. Referees should have called an offensive illegal screen foul by Black 32.
End of the quarter, Black 2 receives a pass from the throw-in and makes a shot. During a shot defender White 9 pushes him from the back. Referees call White 9 act of shooting foul simultaneously with the game clock signal. After foul administration referees correct a game clock.
FIBA OBRI 33.15. Pushing
Pushing is illegal personal contact with any part of the body where a player forcibly moves or attempts to move an opponent with or without the ball.
FIBA OBRI 15.3.1. The act of shooting in a continuous movement on drives to the basket or other moving shots:
Begins when the ball has come to rest in the player’s hand(s), upon completion of a dribble or a catch in the air and the player starts, in the judgment of the referee, the shooting motion preceding the release of the ball for a field goal.
Ends when the ball has left the player’s hand(s), or if an entirely new act of shooting is made and, in case of an airborne shooter, both feet have returned to the floor.
FIBA OBRI 49.2. The timer shall measure playing time as follows:
Stopping the game clock when:
A referee blows his whistle while the ball is live.
However, if in the judgement of a referee, A foul was committed before the end of the quarter or overtime, referees shall correct game time.
Outcome: correct decision from the referees. Black 2 made a shot and White 9 fouled before the game clock signal sounded. As shot was unsuccessful, Black 2 was awarded with two free throws after the Game clock correction.
White 10 receives a pass under the basket and starts act of shooting. During a shot, defender Blue 21 grabs and holds shooter’s hand. Referees call an Unsportsmanlike foul by Blue 21.
FIBA OBRI 15.1.2. The act of shooting on a shot:
Begins when the player starts, in the judgement of a referee, to move the ball upwards towards the opponents’ basket.
Ends when the ball has left the player’s hand(s), or if an entirely new act of shooting is made and, in case of an airborne shooter, both feet have returned to the floor.
FIBA OBRI 37.1.1. An unsportsmanlike foul is a player contact which, in the judgement of a referee is:
- Contact with an opponent and not legitimately attempting to directly play the ball
within the spirit and intent of the rules.
Penalty
37.2.1 An unsportsmanlike foul shall be charged on the offender.
Free throw(s) shall be awarded to the player who was fouled, followed by:
A throw-in from the throw-in line in the team’s frontcourt. The number of free throws shall be awarded as follows:
If the foul is committed on a player in the act of shooting and the goal is not made, 2 or 3 free throws.
Outcome: correct decision from the referees. Blue 21 did not legitimately attempt to directly play the ball within the spirit and intent of the rules, White 10 was awarded with two free throws and after the ball stays with a White team throw-in in the front court.
