The Tough Calls: November 2022

1. On a White team offense White 20 made a shot. Then defender Blue 8 jumped to contest the shot and extended his right foot into shooters landing space. White 20 landed on a Blue 8 foot. Referees called a regular foul on Blue 8.

FIBA OBRI 15.2.1. The act of shooting on a shot: - Ends when the ball has left the player`s hand(s), or if an entirely new act of shooting is made and, in case of an airborne shooter, both feet have returned to the floor. FIBA OBRI 33.6. A player who is in the air - A player who has jumped into the air from a place on the playing court has the right to land again at the same place. - He has the right to land on another place on the playing court provided that the landing place and the direct path between the take-off and landing place is not already occupied by an opponent(s) at the time of take-off.


Outcome: correct decision from the referees. White 20 has rights to land in open, unoccupied spot after the shot. Blue 8 was responsible for this contact. Foul in act of shooting was called correctly, followed by two free throws for White 20.



2. Blue 1 stole the ball and started the fast break. He ran to the basket and Yellow 21 made an illegal contact from the side, grabbed his hand. Blue 1 then lost a balance and speed. Referees called an unsportsmanlike foul. FIBA OBRI 37.1.1 Unsportsmanlike foul -Definition: An unsportsmanlike foul is a player contact which, in the judgement of a referee is:

- (C4) An illegal contact caused by the player from behind or laterally on an opponent, who is progressing towards the opponent`s basket and there are no other players between the progressing player, the ball and the basket. This applies until the offensive player begins his act of shooting.

Outcome: correct decision from the referees. They called a regular foul and immediately upgraded Yellow 21 foul to an unsportsmanlike (C4 criteria – last player/defender and Blue 1 was not in act of shooting yet.


3. On a White team offense White 11 made a three point shot. Defender Blue 11, trying to block the shot, touched White 11`s shooting hand. White 11`s shot was successful and referees left this play with a no call.

FIBA OBRI 15.2.1. The act of shooting on a shot: - Ends when the ball has left the player`s hand(s), or if an entirely new act of shooting is made and, in case of an airborne shooter, both feet have returned to the floor.

FIBA OBRI 33.3 Legal guarding position. - The legal guarding position extends vertically above him (cylinder) from the floor to the ceiling. He may raise his arms and hands above his head or jump vertically but he must maintain them in a vertical position inside the imaginary cylinder.

FIBA OBRI 34.2.2. Penalty - If the foul is committed on a player in the act of shooting, that player shall be awarded a number of free throws as follows: - If the shot released from the field goal area is successful, the goal shall count and, in addition, one free throw. Outcome: incorrect decision from the referees. White 11 was in the act of shooting, Blue 11 illegally used his hand outside his cylinder and was responsible for this contact. Foul in the act of shooting should be called, followed by one free throw for White 11.


4. End of quarter, Black 1 ran and made a shot. Defender White 11 jumped to contest the shot, tried to block it but caused contact with body before shooter landed on the floor. Shot was unsuccessful and Black 1 felt down because of body contact. Referees called a regular foul on White 11. FIBA OBRI 15.2.1. The act of shooting on a shot: - Ends when the ball has left the player`s hand(s), or if an entirely new act of shooting is made and, in case of an airborne shooter, both feet have returned to the floor. FIBA OBRI 33.6. A player who is in the air - A player who has jumped into the air from a place on the playing court has the right to land again at the same place.

- He has the right to land on another place on the playing court provided that the landing place and the direct path between the take-off and landing place is not already occupied by an opponent(s) at the time of take-off. FIBA OBRI 34.2.2. Penalty - If the foul is committed on a player in the act of shooting, that player shall be awarded a number of free throws as follows:

- If the shot released from the 2-point field goal area is unsuccessful, 2 free throws must be awarded. Outcome: correct decision by the referees. Black 1 has right to land in open spot after the shot. White 11 was responsible for this contact. Foul in the act of shooting was called correctly, followed by two free throws for Black 1.


5. Blue team in offense, Blue 8 drove in the paint, made a lay-up pass to Blue 10 who was in the air. Defender White 32 moved under Blue 10 and made a contact with him. Blue 10 touched the ball and made a shot. Shot was unsuccessful. Referees called a regular foul on White 32. FIBA OBRI 15.2.1. The act of shooting on a shot: - Ends when the ball has left the player`s hand(s), or if an entirely new act of shooting is made and, in case of an airborne shooter, both feet have returned to the floor.

FIBA OBRI 33.6. A player who is in the air - A player who has jumped into the air from a place on the playing court has the right to land again at the same place.

- He has the right to land on another place on the playing court provided that the landing place and the direct path between the take-off and landing place is not already occupied by an opponent(s) at the time of take-off.

- An opponent may not move into the path of a player after that player has jumped into the air.

FIBA OBRI 34.2.2. Penalty - If the foul is committed on a player in the act of shooting, that player shall be awarded a number of free throws as follows:

- If the shot released from the 2-point field goal area is unsuccessful, 2 free throws must be awarded.

Outcome: correct decision from the referees. Blue 10 had rights to jump, receive pass in the air and shoot (including dunk). Even White 32 tried to block opponent, he was still moving and was responsible for this contact. Foul in the act of shooting was called correctly, followed by two free throws for Blue 10.
