The Tough Calls: a teaching material before the Final 4

rules.





  1. Traveling violation. Player changes a pivot foot before he starts to dribble. Correct decision from referees.


2. Player with ball makes two steps without a dribble before defender makes a regular foul. Correct decision from referees, traveling first.


3. Player receives a pass and starts to move, changing a pivot (left) foot. Incorrect decision from referees (no call), traveling violation.


4. Player drives in the paint, stops and starts to turn. His foot was removed from the floor before the shot, making a small extra step with it. Incorrect decision from referees (no call), traveling violation.


5. After a legal screen, White 27 held defender`s hand to get advantage in a post play. Correct decision from referees, an offensive foul, illegal play from White27.


6. During the White team`s throw in, off ball situation, White18 sets a screen, but keep moving at the same time. A contact occurred. Correct decision from referees, White18 receives a regular foul – blocking screen, while moving.


7. Blue team in offense, Blue0 sets a screen after the pass. A contact occurs with Yellow4, who fell down. Correct desicion from referees, Blue0 receives a regular foul – a moving screen without time&distance elements.



8. First – a legal defense by the Dark team, second – Dark9 runs on a fast break and gets into a contact with defender Yellow33. Correct decision from referees, Dark9 receives a regular offensive foul – Yellow33 stays in a legal guarding position, no need time&distance, if the attacking player has the ball.


9. First – White2 scores on time, allowed movement, no traveling, second – Black3 in offense, drives in the paint, makes a shot and after a field goal attempt gets into contact with White15. First – correct decision from referees (no call), second – incorrect decision from referees – Black3 basket must count and a regular foul called to him, because White15 was in a legal guarding position.


10. White team on a fast break, first White85 gets into contact with Black1, marginal contact – no call – correct; second – White85 jumps, makes a pass and crash into a defender of the Black team. Correct decision from referees – Black player is into a legal guarding position, contact in torso, a regular offensive foul for White85. After – a correct Technical foul for the head coach of the White team, while showing disrespect to the referees decision.


11. Black team in offense, Black7 receives a pass under the basket, starts to move, loses the ball and steps on the line before additional movement. Referees call out-of-bounds violation. Correct decision from referees, Black7 steps on the line, continues – a correct Technical foul to Black7 for showing disrespect.


12. Yellow team on a fast break, Yellow4 makes two steps before the restricted area, changes direction and gets into contact with defender Blue31. Referees call a regular defensive foul. Correct decision from referees, Blue31 fell down before the contact and the contact point was on side – a regular blocking foul, in this case – a foul during shooting.


13. Black33 makes a shot, after the shot steps on defender`s Yellow9 foot. Correct decision from referees, a shooting foul (a landing foul).


14. Yellow2 makes a shot, after the shot gets into contact with a defender`s Blue31 body. Correct decision from referees, because during Yellow2 field goal attempt, Blue31 stayed in a legal guarding position.


15. Yellow31 makes a shot, after the shot steps on defender`s Dark9 foot. Correct decision from referees, a shooting foul (a landing foul).


16. White7 makes a shot, after the shot gets into contact with the defender`s heel before landing. Correct decision from referees, a shooting foul (a landing foul).


17. Black10 drives to the basket and makes a shot. Ball touches a backboard, when defender Yellow77 hits a backboard. Correct decision from referees – the Goaltending from Yellow77 side, ball touches a backboard and have a chance to go in. The basket counts and game resumes with a throw-in for the Yellow team.


18. First – White11 on a fast break drive to the basket, makes a shot, and gets blocked from defender`s Black15 side – he touches the upward ball first and after it touches a backboard. Correct decision from referees – a legal play, no call. Second – the Black team on a fast break, Black15 makes a field goal attempt and gets blocked from White21 side. Correct decision from referees – White21 blocking move is legal – no basket and a regular shooting foul.


19. White14 on a fast break, drives to the basket and makes a field goal attempt. Ball touches a backboard, followed by immediate block from Black32 side. Correct decision from referees – the Goaltending, Black32 blocks the ball, after the ball touches a backboard. The basket counts and two points are awarded to the White team.


20. Black team stole the ball, start a fast break and a contact occurs between defender White25 and the offensive player Black4. Correct decision from referees – contact must be called, after the call referees chatted and used the IRS. After the IRS – a correct upgrade from the regular foul to the unsportsmanlike foul by White25 – an unnecessary stop on a fast break, contact from side (UF C3).


21. Blue27 grabs a rebound, makes a legal fake move and starts to shoot. Defender Yellow9 jumps and caughts a shooter`s hand during landing. Referees call a regular shooting foul. Incorrect decision from referees – Yellow9 didn't touched a ball, grabbed the shooter`s Blue27 hand over elbow – an unsportsmanlike foul must be called (UF C1). Additional – the referees can use the IRS in this situation.


22. Yellow team in offense, Yellow32 receives a pass under the basket and starts to shoot. Defender Black28 holds the shooter`s hands over elbow. Correct decision from referees. First called a regular shooting foul by Black28, used the IRS and upgraded it to an unsportsmanlike foul – Black28 didn't touched the ball (UF C1).


23. Black team in offense, Black22 receives a pass under the basket, makes a shot and scores after the contact. Correct decision from referees. Patent whistle – when Black22 received the ball, he lost it shortly and the first defender White14 jumped close to the shooter, but without a contact. When Black22 goes up and makes a field goal attempt, the second defender White27 tries to block a shot, but touches the shooter`s head. Black22 release the ball 0,04.seconds before expiration of 24 seconds. The basket counts, shot is made on time, a regular shooting foul by White27, additional one free throw for Black22.
